Popular Turkish comedian Deniz Goktas has been arrested after arriving at Istanbul Airport following allegations related to comments made during one of his stand-up performances. He allegedly insulted Islam and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the show.
The 32-year-old comedian was detained on Thursday after returning from a holiday abroad. Authorities launched an investigation following numerous complaints about his comedy show, which has attracted widespread public attention.
The case comes as Turkish authorities continue expanding legal action against individuals accused of criticizing the country’s leadership or religious values.
Authorities Say Complaints Prompted Investigation
According to prosecutors, Deniz Goktas was taken into custody immediately after arriving at Istanbul Airport. Officials stated that authorities received 185 complaints regarding one of his stand-up performances.
As a result, prosecutors opened an investigation into allegations of “publicly insulting religious values.”
His lawyer, Metin Aslan, also confirmed that Goktas faces an additional accusation of insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The comedian is expected to appear before a court on Friday morning.
Comedy Show Drew Millions of Viewers
The investigation centers on a stand-up performance that Goktas delivered in Istanbul on June 1. Later, the full 90-minute show was uploaded to YouTube on June 24. Since then, the performance has attracted nearly nine million views. Throughout the show, Goktas used satire to discuss political developments in Turkey.
His routine included references to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who remains imprisoned after his arrest last year. The mayor’s detention previously triggered large public protests across the country.
Prosecutors Cite Offensive Statements
Several days after the performance gained widespread attention online, prosecutors formally opened an investigation.
According to officials, the comedian’s remarks included “offensive statements that constituted a criminal offence.” Meanwhile, Goktas stated on X that he was travelling outside Turkey when the investigation began.
Despite the ongoing inquiry, he returned to Turkey on Thursday, where authorities arrested him upon arrival.
Consequently, his legal proceedings are expected to begin immediately.
Career Built Through Stand-Up Comedy
Deniz Goktas began his professional stand-up comedy career in 2019 at Istanbul’s TuzBiber comedy club.
Since then, he has performed across Turkey while also taking his shows to audiences throughout Europe and the United States.
Over the years, he has developed a strong following through live performances and online content. However, the latest investigation has placed his career under renewed public scrutiny.
Case Draws Attention Ahead of Court Hearing
The arrest has generated significant public interest because it involves one of Turkey’s well-known comedians and follows a widely viewed performance.
Meanwhile, prosecutors continue pursuing allegations linked to the content of his stand-up routine. The court is expected to review the case during Friday’s hearing, where further legal developments may emerge.
For now, the investigation remains ongoing as authorities examine the allegations surrounding the performance and the complaints submitted against the comedian.
