President Donald Trump announced new trade agreements with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday during final meetings at a high-stakes summit in Beijing. Trump said both sides secured major progress in agriculture, aviation, and artificial intelligence while also addressing geopolitical tensions, including the Middle East conflict.
Trade talks and strategic cooperation
Trump described Xi as a โgreat leaderโ and confirmed that both countries resolved several long-standing disputes during discussions at Zhongnanhai near the Forbidden City. Moreover, he said the summit produced agreements benefiting both economies. Xi called the visit a โmilestoneโ and stated that Washington and Beijing had established a relationship based on constructive strategic stability.
Later, Trump revealed that China planned to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft and increase imports of American soybeans and oil. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said both governments also discussed creating safeguards for artificial intelligence development despite continuing disputes over US export controls.
Hormuz Strait and Taiwan concerns
During an interview with Fox News, Trump said Xi assured him that China would not provide military equipment to Iran. Additionally, Trump claimed Xi expressed willingness to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz after disruptions linked to the regional war.
However, tensions over Taiwan remained unresolved. Chinese state media reported that Xi warned against actions that could trigger conflict between both powers. Nevertheless, US officials reiterated that Washingtonโs Taiwan policy remained unchanged following the summit.
Taipei welcomed repeated American support after the summit, while investors closely monitored reactions to the proposed commercial agreements. Although Boeing shares slipped after Trumpโs comments, analysts said the negotiations signaled renewed economic engagement between the worldโs two largest economies. Furthermore, officials from both countries pledged to continue discussions during the coming weeks.
