US President Donald Trump has threatened to use his presidential veto powers extensively if Democrats gain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.
Speaking in an interview with the New York Post’s podcast, excerpts of which aired on Fox News on Sunday, Trump said he could become “Mr. Veto” if Republicans lose their congressional majority.
Trump explained that he would reject legislation introduced by Democrats, potentially forcing opposition lawmakers to negotiate with his administration after repeated vetoes.
He suggested that the political standoff could continue for one or two months before both sides eventually reach agreements.
The US president also expressed hope that Republicans would retain control of Congress and avoid such a confrontation.
Meanwhile, the November 3 midterm elections will determine control of the House of Representatives and several Senate seats. Democrats are seeking to regain majorities in both chambers.
A Democratic victory could complicate Trump’s legislative agenda and increase congressional scrutiny of his administration.
According to reports, White House officials have also prepared alternative strategies to advance Trump’s priorities through executive powers without requiring congressional approval.
However, Congress can override a presidential veto with a two-thirds majority in both chambers.
