US President Donald Trump has called on New Mexico to change its name to “New America,” claiming the move would boost the state’s reputation and economic prospects.
Trump made the proposal in a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday. He argued that the new name would increase property values, raise incomes and strengthen residents’ pride in the state.
Trump Says New Name Would Boost Prestige
“New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” Trump wrote.
He added that the proposed name would bring greater value and prestige to the state. Trump first raised the idea in September, describing “New America” as a more prestigious alternative.
However, the president cannot rename a US state through an executive order. Such a change would require a constitutional amendment. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, rejected the proposal when Trump first suggested it.
Trump’s Other Renaming Proposals
The latest proposal follows Trump’s earlier efforts to change the names of geographic landmarks.
In January 2025, he signed an executive order directing federal authorities to use “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico.”
He also signed an order in August directing federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario, which borders the United States and Canada, as “Lake America.” More recently, Trump told a rally in Georgia that he had jokingly asked Google to rename the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean “Trump Ocean.”
His latest suggestion has again drawn attention to his preference for using new names to promote American identity and prestige.
