US President Donald Trump signed an executive order allowing tax-free diesel to Americans face higher fuel costs. Trump approved this facility a few weeks ahead of the mid-term polls in the country.
Trump signed the directive during a rally in Nebraska, announcing that the government would temporarily waive the requirement limiting tax-free dyed diesel, commonly known as red diesel, to off-road use.
The move will allow broader access to the fuel, which is widely used by farmers and operators of off-road vehicles. The administration said the measure aims to ease pressure caused by rising diesel prices.
Under the order, the Treasury secretary, in consultation with the defence secretary, will defer federal excise taxes on dyed diesel used on roads for the remainder of the year. The order also asks officials to explore ways to eliminate the deferred tax obligation.
The Agriculture Department has been directed to ensure farmers can obtain dyed diesel in areas experiencing high demand.
Meanwhile, the Transportation Department will coordinate with states, industry representatives and labour groups to improve fuel access.
The announcement follows a G7 decision to release 100 million barrels of diesel from emergency reserves. The move came after Trump pushed for measures to increase fuel supplies.
Higher diesel prices have raised concerns over transportation costs and inflation, adding pressure on American consumers and businesses.
