US president stresses need for strong guarantees from Tehran
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump indicated that he could support a long-term agreement freezing Iran’s nuclear activities for 20 years, provided Tehran offers what he described as credible and enforceable guarantees.
Speaking about the possibility of a future nuclear arrangement with Iran, Trump suggested that a two-decade halt on Iran’s nuclear programme could satisfy American security concerns if the commitments prove reliable.
“20 years is enough,” Trump said while discussing the issue publicly.
However, he also stressed the importance of verification and trust, adding, “But the level of guarantee from them… it’s got to be a real 20 years.”
Furthermore, Trump’s comments signaled potential flexibility regarding the duration and structure of a future agreement, even as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high.
The remarks come amid ongoing international debate over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, sanctions, and regional security concerns.
Diplomatic uncertainty continues amid regional tensions
Meanwhile, negotiations and indirect diplomatic contacts involving Iran and Western powers have remained uncertain due to disagreements over sanctions relief, nuclear restrictions, and regional conflicts.
Political analysts say Trump’s comments could indicate openness to a compromise framework focused on long-term nuclear restrictions rather than permanent dismantlement.
Additionally, concerns about enforcement mechanisms and monitoring procedures remain central to any future negotiations involving Iran’s nuclear programme.
International observers also note that regional instability and disputes surrounding energy security continue complicating diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Washington.
At the same time, global powers including China and European countries have repeatedly encouraged renewed diplomacy to avoid further escalation in the Middle East.
Neither the White House nor Iranian officials immediately released additional details regarding possible negotiation frameworks or future diplomatic initiatives following Trump’s remarks.
Nevertheless, the statement has drawn significant international attention because it may signal evolving US expectations concerning the duration and conditions of potential nuclear agreements with Iran.
