US President Donald Trump has said American envoys are expected to hold further negotiations with Iran this week, while warning that Tehran has yet to present terms acceptable to Washington.
Speaking to US news outlet *Axios* on Sunday, Trump said Iran wanted an agreement but was seeking terms different from those preferred by the United States. He also suggested Tehran had demanded conditions that Washington might have considered previously.
Trump further indicated that the possibility of renewed US military strikes against Iran remains under consideration.
Meanwhile, a senior US official criticized Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as unacceptable for Washington. The plan, announced by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at the United Nations, reportedly calls for the release of frozen Iranian assets, removal of oil sanctions and an end to the US naval blockade.
US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said Tehran’s demands made the proposal difficult for Washington to accept. However, he added that Trump remains open to reaching an arrangement to end the conflict while keeping all options available.
Trump also said the US military was helping facilitate petroleum shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Trump, tanker traffic reached record levels over the weekend, with more than 20 million barrels of crude passing through the strategic waterway.
