US President Donald Trump said the United States is moving rapidly toward ending the war with Iran and expressed confidence that a deal could soon bring the conflict to a close.
Speaking at the White House, Trump said Iran was eager to reach an agreement after months of fighting and escalating regional tensions.
โWe’re going to end that war very quickly. They want to make a deal so badly, they’re tired of this,โ Trump said while addressing reporters.
The US president added that Washington intended to resolve the conflict peacefully while ensuring Iran could never obtain a nuclear weapon.
โI think we’re going to be finished with that very quickly, and they won’t have a nuclear weapon, and hopefully we’re going to get it done in a very nice manner,โ he stated.
Trump also praised the strength of the US military and claimed recent operations had severely weakened Iranโs military infrastructure and defence capabilities.
โOur military is the greatest in the world,โ he said. โWe wiped out their navy. Their air force is gone. Their anti-aircraft is gone. All of their material that they use for warfare is gone.โ
In addition, Trump suggested that Iranian leadership had suffered major losses during the conflict, although he avoided providing specific details.
The latest remarks came amid continuing tensions in the region following US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February. Tehran later responded with attacks targeting Israel and US allies in the Gulf region, while also closing the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global trade routes and energy supplies.
A ceasefire later took effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation. However, negotiations held in Islamabad failed to secure a permanent agreement between the parties. Despite that, Trump later announced an indefinite extension of the truce as diplomatic efforts continued.
