US President Donald Trump has said Washington is not negotiating with Iran. He also said that significant developments could occur soon as tensions between the two countries remain high.
Speaking to reporters after returning from a campaign rally in South Carolina today, Trump said the United States expected a decisive development in its confrontation with Tehran.
“We are going to have something one way or the other that’ll happen fairly soon,” Trump said, adding that many people expected developments after the US midterm elections.
During his rally, Trump claimed the United States could end the war immediately but wanted to ensure any outcome would deliver lasting results. He also asserted that Washington had defeated Iran militarily and financially, insisting Tehran would never obtain a nuclear weapon.
Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that American and Israeli militaries had developed plans for renewed strikes against Iran following the US midterm elections. However, the report stressed that Trump had not necessarily approved the proposed military action.
A White House official declined to comment on military plans that might or might not exist.
The conflict began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran. Tehran responded with missile and drone strikes across the region, while disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz threatened international energy supplies.
A memorandum of understanding reached in June following mediation by Pakistan and Qatar has also stalled amid disagreements, including over navigation through the strategic waterway. The latest statements have heightened uncertainty over whether Washington will pursue renewed diplomacy or further military action.
