US President Donald Trump said talks with Iran have gained momentum and could lead to an agreement, while warning of possible further military action.
Trump made the remarks during a multilateral meeting with Gulf Cooperation Council countries, including Türkiye, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
He said US officials held a three-hour meeting with Iranian representatives about an hour before his remarks.
According to Trump, the meeting went “very well” and produced enough progress for another round of talks soon.
He said Iran faced two alternatives, suggesting one could result in severe consequences while the other could lead to a better future.
US envoy Steve Witkoff also described the discussions as productive and said he felt positive about their progress.
Witkoff later said the US and Iranian delegations held lengthy discussions through mediators who moved between both sides throughout the day.
He added that the mediators would continue their efforts after completing what he called a constructive and promising round.
Iran delegation led by Araghchi
Citing Iranian officials, The New York Times reported that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi led the Iranian delegation during the talks.
The report said Pakistan and Qatar mediated the discussions between Washington and Tehran.
Meanwhile, sources said the talks focused on efforts to reach an agreement between the United States and Iran.
Trump also warned that Washington could take additional military action against Iranian nuclear facilities if necessary.
However, his comments about the latest meeting indicated that diplomatic efforts remained active.
The developments came as world leaders gathered in New York for the UN General Assembly, where Iran’s nuclear programme remains a major international concern.
