NEW YORK: US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he believes Washington could reach an agreement with Iran shortly after the US midterm elections, while warning Tehran of severe consequences if negotiations fail.
Speaking at the 81st UN General Assembly, Trump said Iranian officials were waiting to see the outcome of the elections. However, he insisted that domestic politics would not influence his approach towards Tehran.
Trump said his administration had offered Iran economic cooperation in exchange for ending its nuclear programme after he returned to office, but claimed Tehran rejected the proposal. He reiterated that Washington would not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon and urged other countries to increase economic pressure on Tehran.
Trump Says Russia-Ukraine Agreement Could Come Soon
Turning to Ukraine, Trump said his administration was working closely with Russian and Ukrainian leaders to end the conflict.
He said his message to Russian President Vladimir Putin was to “settle the war.” Trump was also expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the UN gathering.
Meanwhile, Trump said a Venezuelan oil arrangement was beginning to progress, with major international oil companies entering the country.
He also criticised Mexico over cartel violence and predicted major political change in Cuba, describing its government as under unprecedented pressure.
Greenland, ICC and AI Feature in UN Address
Furthermore, Trump said Washington planned to establish a larger military presence in Greenland, including two major bases, under a new security agreement.
Trump also urged countries belonging to the International Criminal Court to withdraw from the institution, which he strongly criticised.
On artificial intelligence, Trump said US government documents would increasingly use the term “super intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence.”
