US President Donald Trump has said he is willing to accept the results of the 2026 midterm elections and work with Democrats as the opposition party moves closer to taking control of Congress.
In an interview with The New York Times, Trump said he would respect the election outcome and cooperate with Democratic lawmakers despite significant Republican setbacks.
“I am absolutely willing to accept those results,” Trump said during a telephone interview late Tuesday while watching election returns at the White House.
He also expressed optimism about potential cooperation, saying both parties could reach agreements on important legislative matters.
Trump’s remarks came as Democrats made substantial gains in several closely contested races, putting them in a position to control both chambers of Congress.
The election results could significantly affect Trump’s domestic and foreign policy agenda during the remainder of his presidential term.
However, Trump partly blamed his absence from the ballot for the Republican Party’s disappointing performance. He suggested that Republicans might have achieved better results if he had personally contested the election.
Democratic control of Congress could increase scrutiny of the administration and complicate efforts to pass legislation.
The outcome marks an important shift in Washington’s political landscape and sets the stage for negotiations between the White House and congressional Democrats.
