US president says decision could come soon as regional tensions persist
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said he is close to deciding whether to launch a new large-scale military operation against Iran, according to remarks published by Axios on Thursday.
Speaking to the news outlet, Trump said he was considering what he described as a “massive attack,” adding that preparations were in place should he decide to proceed.
“I am considering a massive attack. Bigger than ever before. I am close to making a decision,” Trump told Axios.
The president also addressed the potential role of Israel, saying it could quickly join any operation if requested. However, he added that the United States did not require military assistance and suggested Israeli involvement could carry broader regional consequences.
Trump comments on Iran and Netanyahu
Trump said his relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remained strong and indicated he would be willing to meet him if the opportunity arose.
He also claimed that Iran wanted to negotiate with Washington but argued that Tehran had “not received enough pain yet” to alter its position. Trump did not provide further details about ongoing diplomatic contacts or possible conditions for renewed talks.
According to Axios, two regional sources said the Iranian leadership had not accepted the latest proposal presented during negotiations and described Tehran’s approach as unhelpful. The report did not identify the sources.
Diplomatic uncertainty continues
The latest remarks come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and continued speculation over the future of diplomatic efforts.
While Trump signalled that military action remains under consideration, no formal announcement has been made regarding a new operation against Iran. US officials have not publicly confirmed any final decision.
Iran has repeatedly called for negotiations based on what it describes as mutual respect while condemning US military pressure and sanctions. Meanwhile, Washington has maintained that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains a central objective of its Middle East policy.
