U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that the United States would eventually obtain Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium despite indications from Tehran that it would not surrender the material. His remarks came as tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme and future negotiations continued to draw international attention.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said Washington would ultimately secure the uranium and prevent Iran from retaining control over it. He also stated that the material could be destroyed after retrieval, emphasizing that the United States would not allow Tehran to possess resources that could contribute to nuclear weapons development.
Furthermore, Trump linked the issue to broader American objectives concerning Iran’s nuclear activities. Officials have repeatedly stated that preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon remains a central policy priority for Washington.
Conflicting Positions Add Pressure to Negotiations
Meanwhile, reports indicated that Iran is believed to possess around 900 pounds of highly enriched uranium. Trump previously stated that U.S. and Israeli military strikes nearly a year ago had buried the material, although questions surrounding its status and location continue to attract attention.
At the same time, reports citing two senior Iranian sources stated that Iran’s Supreme Leader issued a directive preventing the transfer of near-weapons-grade uranium outside the country. The reported position suggested Tehran remains firm regarding control over its nuclear material.
Consequently, the differing positions from both sides highlighted continuing divisions over one of the most sensitive issues in the broader nuclear discussions. Analysts noted that disagreements involving uranium storage, ownership, and future handling procedures may continue to complicate diplomatic efforts.
