US President Donald Trump has nominated Hung Cao to serve as secretary of the US Navy, describing him as a “true warrior” and a strong choice to lead the Navy and Marine Corps.
Trump announced the nomination on his Truth Social platform, praising Cao as a patriotic figure capable of leading American sailors and Marines. He said serving in the role would rank among the greatest honours of Cao’s life.
Trump Highlights Military Shipbuilding
The president also highlighted his administration’s focus on strengthening the US military and accelerating warship production. He said the government would continue working to expand America’s ability to build naval vessels while protecting national security.
Cao currently serves as acting secretary of the Navy and has held the position since April 2026. He assumed the role after former Navy Secretary John Phelan resigned from the position.
The nomination comes as the Trump administration places increased attention on expanding US military capabilities. In particular, naval shipbuilding has emerged as an important priority as Washington seeks to strengthen the country’s maritime defence.
Cao Could Lead Navy And Marine Corps
If the Senate confirms his nomination, Cao would formally lead the Department of the Navy. The department oversees both the US Navy and Marine Corps, making the position a key role in America’s national defence structure.
Cao’s nomination also signals the administration’s intention to maintain its current focus on military readiness and defence production. His experience as acting secretary could provide continuity if lawmakers approve his appointment.
