US President Donald Trump’s administration has asked Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign after a series of ethics allegations involving money requests and luxury hospitality.
White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed on Tuesday that Guilfoyle had been asked to step down. Trump had acknowledged a day earlier that he was considering removing her from the post.
Trump said Guilfoyle had performed well but added that the administration was concerned about recent reports regarding her conduct.
Guilfoyle has rejected the allegations. In a statement, she said the claims were false and pledged to defend her reputation and integrity.
The controversy intensified after reports by The Wall Street Journal examined her financial dealings and relationships with wealthy businessmen.
The newspaper reported that Guilfoyle asked Trump supporter Eric Deters to pay $100,000 in personal credit card debt shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing in July 2025. Her lawyer has disputed the authenticity of the messages and denied wrongdoing.
Separate reports also alleged that Guilfoyle received luxury travel and accommodation from wealthy Greek businessmen. These reportedly included private jet travel, stays at expensive hotels and visits to exclusive European resorts.
US media reports say the State Department inspector general is investigating whether she accepted improper gifts.
Guilfoyle was appointed ambassador after previously working as a prosecutor and television commentator. She was also once engaged to Donald Trump Jr.
The controversy emerged shortly after Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Europe, including Athens.
Guilfoyle has highlighted her work on expanding US energy exports and strengthening security ties with Greece. However, the resignation request now places her diplomatic future in serious doubt.
