US President Donald Trump has confirmed that his administration is considering removing Kimberly Guilfoyle from her position as ambassador to Greece following allegations of professional misconduct.
Speaking to reporters while leaving the White House for Ohio, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the ambassador, saying the administration was reviewing the situation.
The controversy centers on allegations that Guilfoyle accepted expensive gifts while serving in Athens and sought money in exchange for providing access to senior US administration officials before her Senate confirmation. However, the allegations remain under investigation.
According to reports, the US State Department’s Office of Inspector General has launched an official inquiry into the matter.
The investigation follows concerns raised by Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. She urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to examine Guilfoyle’s diplomatic conduct and relationships with corporate lobbyists.
Another focus involves Christos Marafatsos, a lobbyist representing Greek corporate clients. Reports allege that he accompanied Guilfoyle to high-level bilateral government meetings without proper authorisation.
The scrutiny intensified following reports about a dinner held on March 18, 2026, during which Guilfoyle allegedly made controversial remarks to Greece’s energy minister about political developments in Romania.
The investigation could have significant implications for Guilfoyle’s diplomatic future and raise broader questions about transparency, lobbying, and ethical standards within US diplomatic appointments.
The administration has not announced a final decision regarding her position.
