US President Donald Trump has congratulated Democrats on their major victory in the 2026 midterm elections, while acknowledging that the ongoing war with Iran contributed to the Republican Party’s electoral defeat.
Speaking in a telephone interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Trump praised the Democratic campaign and recognised its success in securing control of Congress.
“Congratulations to the Democrats. They did a good job,” Trump said, adding that the opposition party had been pursuing this victory for 11 years.
Trump also admitted that the Iran conflict played a role in Republican losses, particularly because of rising fuel prices and growing economic concerns among American voters.
“I think a part of it was Iran,” he said, while defending his administration’s military actions against Tehran.
The election results have handed Democrats control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, creating significant political challenges for Trump’s remaining presidential term.
Despite congratulating his opponents, Trump refused to accept personal responsibility for the Republican setback. He argued that several candidates performed poorly and claimed Republicans would have achieved better results if he had personally appeared on the ballot.
Trump expressed willingness to cooperate with Democratic lawmakers on certain issues but warned that he would veto legislation he considered unacceptable.
The Democratic victory is expected to increase congressional scrutiny of Trump’s domestic and foreign policies.
