US President Donald Trump has invoked the September 11 attacks while urging Michigan voters to oppose Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Port Huron on Sunday, October 25, Trump portrayed El-Sayed as a security threat and compared him to the hijackers involved in the 2001 attacks.
“I’m here to keep a jihadist, Muslim Brotherhood member from becoming a United States senator,” Trump told supporters.
He also compared the election campaign to the actions of passengers who fought back against hijackers aboard United Airlines Flight 93. Furthermore, he warned that El-Sayed’s election could threaten national security.
However, El-Sayed has rejected the accusations, denying any affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood.
Candidate Rejects Allegations
El-Sayed, a Michigan-born politician, is seeking an open US Senate seat in one of the country’s closely watched midterm contests.
If elected, he would become the first Muslim to serve in the US Senate. Meanwhile, Republican candidate Mike Rogers is also competing for the seat, which could help determine control of the chamber.
Rogers has questioned El-Sayed’s political associations but said he had never called him a terrorist. He has also alleged links to the Muslim Brotherhood without presenting evidence of such an affiliation.
El-Sayed has described questions about his loyalty to the United States as shameful. In addition, he has argued that attacks targeting his faith distract from issues affecting Michigan residents.
Obama Criticises Campaign Rhetoric
Trump’s remarks came a day after former US president Barack Obama campaigned for Democrats in Detroit. Obama criticised efforts to portray El-Sayed as less American because of his name and background.
The Michigan race has become increasingly important ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Both parties are seeking gains in Congress, where narrow Republican majorities are at stake.
Consequently, the campaign has drawn national attention, with immigration, religious identity, economic pressures, and national security emerging as key themes.
The controversy continues as candidates compete for support in a state expected to play a significant role in determining the balance of power in Washington.
