US President Donald Trump has criticised Ukraine’s renewed attacks on Russian oil refineries, calling the strikes a “disgrace” and warning that they could keep global energy prices elevated.
In an interview with Newsmax aired on Thursday, Trump accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of undermining efforts to stabilise energy markets by targeting facilities that produce diesel fuel.
According to Reuters, Ukraine recently struck a Rosneft oil refinery in Russia’s Ryazan region, southeast of Moscow. The facility helps supply fuel to the Russian capital.
Trump argued that Ukraine could target other military installations instead of oil infrastructure, which he said played an important role in meeting global energy demand.
The US president also criticised Zelensky’s approach to negotiations, saying he found the Ukrainian leader more difficult to deal with than Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump reiterated his belief that both leaders wanted the war to end, despite their deep hostility.
The renewed attacks followed the collapse of a proposed energy ceasefire announced by Trump. Ukraine had temporarily suspended strikes on Russian energy facilities but resumed operations after accusing Moscow of continuing attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Russia intensified missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian energy facilities, disrupting electricity supplies and leaving hundreds of thousands of people without power.
The dispute has further strained relations between Washington and Kyiv as the Trump administration continues efforts to negotiate an end to the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The latest developments raise fresh questions about diplomatic efforts to halt the conflict and stabilise global energy markets.
