US President Donald Trump has announced an immediate ceasefire on attacks against energy infrastructure between Russia and Ukraine. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had not been informed about the agreement beforehand.
Trump announced the development on Sunday through his Truth Social platform, stating that both countries had agreed to stop targeting each other’s energy facilities. He urged both sides to respect the arrangement and avoid violating its terms.
However, Zelenskyy told Axios that Ukraine was willing to suspend attacks on Russian energy facilities if Moscow halted strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure. He stressed that any de-escalation must involve reciprocal commitments and reliable guarantees.
The announcement comes amid growing tensions between Trump and Zelenskyy over efforts to end the conflict and manage rising global fuel prices.
Earlier, Trump announced a diesel supply agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, under which Moscow agreed to provide fuel to the United States and international markets.
Zelenskyy criticised the arrangement, describing it as a weak decision and warning that easing restrictions on Russian diesel exports could provide Moscow with additional resources to finance its military campaign.
Trump, meanwhile, blamed Ukrainian strikes for rising fuel prices and suggested that Ukraine needed new leadership, further intensifying the disagreement between Washington and Kyiv.
The proposed energy ceasefire could represent a significant step towards reducing attacks on critical infrastructure, although questions remain about its implementation and whether both countries will formally honour the arrangement.
