WASHINGTON: The Donald Trump administration has revoked more than 300,000 visas since he returned to office in January 2025.The State Department announced this development as Washington intensifies its crackdown on immigration.
According to the department, the number of visa cancellations has increased significantly in recent weeks. In an update issued on August 10, authorities reported more than 175,000 revocations since the beginning of Trump’s second term.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the administration had revoked visas at a faster rate than any previous administration. He added that the government maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards foreign nationals who violate US laws, commit fraud or threaten national security.
The cancellations have affected individuals accused of various offences and immigration violations. The administration has also revoked visas belonging to foreign nationals involved in pro-Palestinian demonstrations and individuals whose social media comments attracted official scrutiny.
Meanwhile, the government has tightened social media screening for immigrants and visa applicants as part of its broader immigration enforcement measures.
President Trump has defended the crackdown, arguing that stricter immigration policies and deportations are necessary to protect national security and improve public safety.
However, human rights advocates have criticised several measures, raising concerns about due process, freedom of expression and possible racial profiling. Critics argue that national security justifications could also be used against immigrants who express political views opposed to the administration.
The administration has also introduced measures that make certain legal immigration pathways more difficult, including higher fees for some work visas.
The latest figures highlight the scale of Washington’s immigration enforcement campaign, which continues to affect foreign nationals living in and seeking entry to the United States.
