US president questions Tehran’s statements while reaffirming American naval presence in the Gulf
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump sharply criticized Iran’s leadership on Monday, accusing Tehran of sending conflicting signals about ongoing diplomatic contacts and describing Iranian officials as “unbelievably duplicitous.”
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed Iranian officials privately sought meetings with the United States while publicly denying that any negotiations were taking place.
“They ask for a meeting, talks begin, with more scheduled in the immediate future, and they say openly and proudly that they’re not having any discussions,” Trump wrote, expressing frustration over what he described as contradictory messaging from Tehran.
The remarks came amid continued uncertainty over diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between Washington and Tehran following months of regional confrontation.
Trump reiterates pressure strategy
Meanwhile, the US president reaffirmed his administration’s hardline approach toward Iran, stating that no meaningful progress would occur unless an agreement was reached or Iran accepted what he described as total surrender.
Trump also dismissed Iranian claims regarding control over the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that the strategic waterway is already under the effective control of the United States Navy.
His comments followed renewed speculation about possible diplomatic contacts, although Iranian officials have repeatedly denied that direct negotiations with Washington are currently underway.

The latest exchange highlights the continued tensions between the United States and Iran despite intermittent reports of mediation efforts involving regional partners.
