Pakistan’s top political leadership has begun high-level consultations over the latest security and political situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived at Aiwan-i-Sadr in Islamabad on Saturday for talks with President Asif Ali Zardari. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was also expected to join the meeting shortly.
Senior political leaders and federal ministers are also expected to participate.
The meeting will focus on the evolving situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Participants will receive a detailed briefing on current security conditions in the province.
Officials are also expected to discuss available constitutional options and possible engagement with opposition parties.
Important decisions could be taken after reviewing the political and security challenges facing the province.
The consultations come at a time of heightened concern over militancy, governance and political tensions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The federal government has recently intensified discussions with political leaders as it looks for ways to address the situation through both security measures and dialogue.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Zardari held another key meeting on October 5.
That discussion also focused on Pakistan’s political environment and major security issues. Senior political figures and officials attended the meeting at the Presidency.
The latest round of consultations suggests that the federal leadership is giving increased attention to developments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
A comprehensive assessment of the security situation is expected to guide the next steps.
Possible engagement with opposition leaders may also become a key part of the government’s strategy.
The meeting comes as political parties continue to debate how the federal government should respond to security threats and political instability in the province.
Further announcements are expected after the consultations conclude and the leadership finalizes its decisions.
