Fans Call New Digger Teaser “Weird”
Tom Cruise has released the teaser for his upcoming film Digger, but the unusual trailer has left fans divided. The teaser was released on 23 June and runs for just over three minutes.
However, viewers quickly noticed something unexpected. For the first two and a half minutes, the teaser does not show any footage from Digger. Instead, it features a montage of Cruise’s most famous films, including Risky Business, A Few Good Men, Rain Man, Mission: Impossible, and War of the Worlds.
The teaser then uses a voiceover from Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, saying, “Everything you are, everything you’ve done… has come to this.” Only after this does the trailer reveal a brief glimpse of the new film.
What Is Tom Cruise’s Digger About?
Digger follows Rockwell, the world’s most powerful oil magnate. He races to prove that he is humanity’s saviour before an ecological disaster of his own making destroys everything.
Cruise is said to be almost unrecognisable in the role. He appears with thinning white hair and a Southern accent. The film’s tagline describes it as a “comedy of catastrophic proportions.”
The film is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who is known for Birdman and The Revenant. Iñárritu has also written the film with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman.
The cast includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons.
Social Media Reacts To Digger Teaser
Tom Cruise shared the teaser on X with a message for fans. He said it has been his privilege to work with talented artists and crews for the last 46 years. He also said he is looking forward to seeing audiences at the movies.
The response online has been mixed. Some Reddit users said they felt misled after watching the teaser. They initially thought the montage was announcing theatrical re-releases of Cruise’s classic films.
Others believed the teaser looked like the beginning of an Oscar campaign. One viewer called it a “weird marketing choice.”
However, several fans praised the trailer and Cruise’s career. One X user said Tom Cruise is his own cinematic universe. Another called him one of the biggest film stars of all time.
Director J.J. Abrams also praised the upcoming film after seeing early footage. He said Cruise could surprise audiences with Digger and called the film a bold and wild next step in his career.
Digger will open exclusively in IMAX on 2 October 2026.
