Iran has asked India to release three tankers that were seized in February as part of the negotiations. It sought ensurance regarding the safe passage of Indian-bound ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Indian government seized the shipsโAsphalt Star, Al Jafzia, and Stellar Rubyโnear Indian waters. They were discovered to have altered their identities and engaged in illegal ship-to-ship transfers. The Stellar Ruby is an Iranian-flagged vessel, while the other two are registered in Nicaragua and Mali. The tankers are currently anchored off the coast of Mumbai.
Iran has also asked for some medication and medical equipment as part of the negotiations. The Iranian ambassador held talks with Indian foreign ministry officials on Monday. However, there has been no official confirmation from either side.
Negotiations and Gulf Shipments
Since the start of the US and Israeli attacks on Iran in late February, Iranian forces have targeted ships in the Gulf. These attacks killed three Indian sailors and left one missing. India said at least 22 Indian-flagged vessels and 611 Indian seafarers remain in the region.
Recently, Iran allowed two Indian LPG tankers to pass safely through the strait. One of the tankers reached western India on Monday. Indiaโs foreign ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, said these ship movements show the long history of cooperation between the two countries.
Allegations and Defense
As per the Indian government, Asphalt Star was smuggling heavy fuel oil, which was later loaded into Al Jafzia, and bitumen was loaded into Stellar Ruby.
However, Jugwinder Singh Brar, a consultant for all three ships, denied the charges. โWe were carrying bitumen, and there is nothing wrong with that. My vessels have been there for 40 days, and I have incurred losses,โ he said.
Iranian state media also reported that the National Iranian Oil Company had no connection with the seized ships.
