Automated System Flagged Livestream Within Minutes
TikTok has acknowledged that a moderation error delayed the removal of a disturbing livestream involving celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.
Hilton, whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., was hospitalized on August 4 after appearing to harm himself during a livestream from his Miami home.
TikTok said its automated safety system detected the livestream within minutes and flagged it for review.
The system correctly directed the content to the platform’s United States moderation team.
However, a human moderation error delayed further action. The livestream remained accessible for approximately 15 minutes before it was removed.
A TikTok spokesperson confirmed that the platform’s automated technology had worked as intended. The problem occurred during the human review process.
TikTok later banned Hilton’s account for violating its community guidelines.
The platform prohibits content that depicts, promotes or encourages self-harm.
TikTok also confirmed that it alerted law enforcement authorities about the livestream.
The incident has raised fresh questions about how quickly social media companies can respond when automated systems identify potentially life-threatening content.
Viewers Alert Authorities as Police Respond to Miami Home
Several viewers also contacted emergency services after becoming concerned about Hilton’s safety.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies were sent to his home after receiving reports involving a person livestreaming acts of self-harm.
Authorities established contact with Hilton’s family and confirmed that he was alone inside the property when officers responded.
Law enforcement officers eventually entered the home and safely recovered Hilton.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue then transported him to a local hospital for medical treatment.
The sheriff’s office said its response focused on communication, de-escalation and safety because officers were dealing with a mental health crisis.
Hilton’s three children were not inside the home when authorities entered.
His family later said the children had been moved away from the situation before the emergency response developed.
The episode generated significant concern among Hilton’s followers and other online personalities.
It also highlighted the risks created when distressing livestreams remain available long enough to be viewed, recorded and redistributed across other social platforms.
Family Says Hilton Can Communicate as Recovery Remains Priority
Hilton’s family has since provided a limited update on his condition.
They confirmed that he was receiving medical care and said he was able to communicate.
His family described that development as a source of hope while asking the public to respect his privacy.
They said their main focus remained Hilton’s health and recovery.
The family also requested privacy for his children and other relatives affected by the incident.
Golden Artists Entertainment, which represents Hilton, also said its priority was his well-being and the privacy of his family.
TikTok’s acknowledgment of the moderation failure has added another dimension to the case.
The company says it uses automated detection systems alongside human moderators to identify dangerous material.
However, the Hilton incident demonstrates that even when automated technology successfully flags content, delays during human review can prevent immediate removal.
The company has since deactivated and banned Hilton’s account.
As Hilton continues receiving care, attention is now focused both on his recovery and on questions surrounding TikTok’s handling of emergency content.
