ISLAMABAD: Authorities enforced extraordinary security measures across Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Thursday as preparations intensified for crucial talks between the United States and Iran in the federal capital. Consequently, the administration and police sealed major arteries, including Old Airport Road and routes leading to Nur Khan Airbase, using containers and barbed wire.
As a result, several neighbourhoods, including Shah Khalid Colony, Gulzar-e-Quaid and Airport Housing Society, faced severe restrictions, with residents largely confined to their homes. Moreover, traffic diversions and extensive road closures triggered widespread disruption, particularly along the stretch from Rahimabad to Koral Chowk. Even service roads and internal streets remained blocked, further limiting mobility.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies maintained a high alert across the district, deploying personnel at key locations. Public transport also suffered, as commuters using electric buses were dropped at Tipu Road instead of major stops, forcing many, including women and children, to walk long distances. In addition, traffic congestion worsened on major routes such as Murree Road, Committee Chowk, and Saddar.
Residents voiced frustration over the lack of prior notice, which left them struggling to secure essential supplies. Shortages of food and water emerged, while some vendors reportedly increased prices. Furthermore, students returning from matriculation exams faced significant hardship due to transport suspensions.
At the same time, authorities directed traders in Saddar and surrounding areas to keep businesses closed for two days, although markets on Murree Road and Raja Bazaar remained open. Public transport services, including the Metro Bus, also faced partial suspension. Overall, residents urged officials to ensure access to essential services during the heightened security period.
