Bannu and Lower South Waziristan witnessed deadly incidents involving drones and explosives, raising serious security concerns.
In Bannu’s Mamand Khel area, a quadcopter crashed into a residential locality on Saturday. As a result, three young boys lost their lives, while another child was seriously injured.
Local residents said the drone fell in the Pattona Mamand Khel neighborhood without warning. The victims were identified as Faisal, 16, Abrar, 20, and Muhammad, 12. A nine-year-old boy, Muhammad Aiman, sustained injuries during the crash.
Soon after the incident, rescue teams and security personnel reached the area. Meanwhile, locals gathered at the site as authorities secured the surroundings. The area was cordoned off, and an investigation was launched immediately. Officials are trying to determine the drone’s origin and its intended purpose.
Repeated Drone Attacks on Police Post
Earlier, the Sheikh Landik police post in Bannu was targeted in a separate incident. According to police, attackers used quadcopters and sniper fire late Friday night. Two explosive devices were dropped using drones near the police post building.
Both devices exploded after landing close to the structure. However, no casualties were reported in that attack. Police said sniper fire was also directed from another location.
Authorities revealed the police post has faced repeated attacks recently. At least fourteen such incidents were reported within the past month. Security has since been tightened across sensitive locations in the district.
IED Blast Kills Afghan Girl in Lower South Waziristan
In another tragic incident, an IED blast struck Lower South Waziristan on Saturday. The explosion occurred on the Wana–Karikot Road near a bridge. Due to the blast’s intensity, the bridge suffered severe damage and collapsed.
A minor Afghan girl lost her life in the incident. Police said she was standing on her house rooftop at the time. The explosion caused part of the roof to collapse on her. She was rushed to the DHQ Hospital in Wana in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries.
The blast also damaged a nearby house and a parked private vehicle. Traffic in the area was disrupted due to the bridge collapse.
Investigation Underway
Following the explosion, police secured the area and collected evidence. An investigation has been launched to identify those responsible. Authorities are also examining the nature of the explosive device used.
These incidents have heightened fear among residents across both districts. Security agencies continue operations to prevent further attacks.
