A school in Thailand became the scene of a deadly shooting on Friday after a student allegedly opened fire before turning the weapon on himself. At least seven people died, while 15 others suffered injuries, according to police. The incident occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, located northwest of Bangkok. As emergency teams arrived, students rushed out while injured victims received treatment and teachers comforted one another.
National Police spokesman Lt. Col. Trirong Phophan confirmed that the suspected shooter was among those killed.
Students Describe Moments of Terror
An 18-year-old student said he initially mistook the sounds for firecrackers or someone hitting an object.
“I didn’t think it was a gun at first,” he said. “There were many shots: bang bang bang. Then it went quiet. Then it started again.”
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed shock over the incident.
“It’s such a terrible incident. It should never have happened. How could this happen in our country?” Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters at Bangkok’s Government House.
Emergency worker Kiatikhun Verapongpradith said his team treated students with wounds to their backs, chests and arms.
He also reported finding a dead male teacher upstairs. A female teacher suffered chest and arm injuries and later received emergency treatment.
“We gave CPR for about 30 minutes and rushed her to the hospital as we could not get her heart rate up, but we tried our best,” he said.
Thailand Faces Repeated Shooting Incidents
The shooting marks Thailand’s second school shooting this year. In February, a teacher died after a shooting at a school in the southern city of Hat Yai. Thailand has also experienced several deadly shootings in recent years. In 2022, a former policeman killed 36 people in a three-hour attack in the northeast.
The country also recorded deadly shootings in Bangkok in 2025 and at a shopping centre in 2023.
The latest tragedy has once again raised concerns about gun violence and school safety in Thailand. Authorities are now working to support affected families, students and teachers following the devastating attack.
