Cabin Crew and Onboard Nurse Handle Emergency with Calm, Precision
MUMBAI – In an extraordinary and heartwarming incident at 35,000 feet, a Thai woman gave birth mid-flight onboard an Air India Express flight from Muscat to Mumbai on Wednesday. The rare in-transit delivery occurred with the swift assistance of the airline’s highly trained cabin crew and a nurse who was fortunately traveling as a passenger.
According to airline officials, the incident unfolded smoothly thanks to the professional response of the flight crew. Upon realizing the emergency, the cabin crew created a safe and private space for the woman to deliver her baby. A nurse onboard stepped in to help with the delivery, providing crucial medical support during the labor.
The pilots, Capt. Ashish Vaghani and Capt. Faraz Ahmed, quickly alerted air traffic control and requested a priority landing slot at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. In response, emergency medical teams and an ambulance were dispatched and stationed at the airport ahead of the plane’s arrival.
As soon as the aircraft landed, the mother and her newborn were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation. A female airline staff member accompanied them to ensure comfort and continued care. Reports indicate that both the mother and the baby are in stable condition.
Air India Express Praises Coordination and Compassion
Air India Express commended the professionalism and empathy shown by everyone involved, including the ground staff, airport authorities, and medical responders. “This extraordinary moment highlights not only the preparedness of our team but also the spirit of compassion and teamwork that defines Air India Express,” the airline said in a public statement.
The crew members who assisted in the delivery included Senior Cabin Crew Sneha Naga and cabin crew members Aishwarya Shirke, Asiya Khalid, and Muskan Chauhan. The airline has also reached out to the Consulate General of Thailand in Mumbai to provide further assistance to the new mother regarding her travel and documentation.
This remarkable mid-air birth adds to the rare but memorable global list of babies born in transit — whether in planes, buses, ambulances, or cars — reminding the world that life can begin in the most unexpected places.
