Taylor Swift has made MTV Video Music Awards history by becoming the artist with the most Moonman trophies. The 36-year-old singer had been tied with Beyoncé at 30 wins. However, she broke the record after receiving the inaugural Artist Director Honours for her visual storytelling work.
Swift also won Video of the Year for her latest release.
Taylor Swift Breaks VMA Record
Swift’s new record came through the newly introduced Artist Director Honours. The award recognised her work behind the camera and her contribution to visual storytelling.
She also took home Video of the Year. Meanwhile, Swift used her acceptance speech to honour the late country music icon Dolly Parton.
Swift praised Parton’s songwriting and storytelling, saying every song she wrote had vivid storytelling.
She also highlighted Parton’s grace, love and gratitude while dealing with fame.
Swift Premieres Patient Zero Video
Swift also used the ceremony to premiere the music video for her new single Patient Zero. The video stars Hollywood actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson.
In the song, Swift warns a woman about a relationship with a toxic partner. She reflects on her own experience with the man and presents herself as someone who recognised the warning signs first.
The music video added another major moment to Swift’s VMA night.
Madonna Wins Artist of the Year
Despite Swift’s record-breaking night, she missed out on one of the ceremony’s biggest awards. Madonna won Artist of the Year, adding another major achievement to her decades-long career.
During her acceptance speech, Madonna recalled her first MTV Video Music Awards appearance. She remembered how her manager criticised her after she briefly exposed herself during a performance.
Madonna joked that the manager told her that her career was over. She then noted that he was no longer her manager.
Madonna Returns to the VMA Stage
Madonna also opened the ceremony with her first VMA performance since her famous 2003 appearance.
That earlier performance became one of the most memorable moments in MTV history. Madonna famously kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during a medley. This time, Madonna performed Bring Your Love with Sabrina Carpenter.
She later joined Charli XCX for a performance of Danceteria.
Madonna and Carpenter also won Best Collaboration. During their acceptance moment, they joked about Madonna contacting Carpenter through social media to bring the collaboration together.
Nirvana Receives Video Vanguard Award
Grunge legends Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award.
The band became the first group in more than two decades to receive the honour.
Nirvana achieved global success with albums including Nevermind and In Utero. Frontman Kurt Cobain died by suicide in 1994.
After a retrospective celebrating the band’s music videos, bassist Krist Novoselic reflected on Nirvana’s lasting influence.
He said the band continues to connect with audiences because people remain interested in authenticity.
LISA Wins Best Pop
Meanwhile, Thai artist LISA, a member of Blackpink, won Best Pop.
She received the award for Dream, featuring Japanese actor Kentaro Sakaguchi.
The win added another international achievement to LISA’s growing solo career.
Dolly Parton and George Michael Honoured
The ceremony also featured several musical tributes.
Kacey Musgraves headlined a tribute to Dolly Parton following the country legend’s death.
Meanwhile, Teddy Swims, Sombr and Raye paid tribute to George Michael.
Their performance marked 40 years since the release of Michael’s landmark album Faith.
Snoop Dogg Hosts MTV VMAs
Rapper Snoop Dogg hosted the ceremony, which aired on CBS and MTV. Although many awards were presented away from the main stage, performances and celebrity moments remained central to the event. Swift’s record-breaking night, Madonna’s Artist of the Year win and Nirvana’s Video Vanguard honour became some of the ceremony’s biggest highlights.
