US President Donald Trump is facing criticism from both Republicans and Democrats over taxpayer-funded television advertisements airing ahead of the November midterm elections.
The advertisements are marked “Paid for by the US Government” and feature Trump delivering strongly political messages. One recent commercial aired during NFL broadcasts and used footage of Trump walking through a hallway while describing a “final battle.”
White House Defends Government-Funded Ads
The White House has described the commercials as public service announcements rather than political advertisements. Officials said the campaigns are intended to promote patriotism and remind Americans about national values.
The administration also compared the advertisements with public information campaigns launched by previous presidents during national emergencies and major events.
However, critics have questioned whether taxpayer money should be used for advertisements featuring Trump and messages closely associated with his political campaigns.
Republican Senator John Kennedy said public officials should not use government funds to promote themselves. Democratic lawmakers have also described the advertisements as propaganda and questioned their legality.
Ads Resemble Earlier Trump Campaign Material
The latest commercial reportedly resembles an advertisement Trump used during his 2024 presidential campaign. The new version removes campaign branding but retains similar imagery and messaging.
The controversy comes weeks before the US midterm elections. Trump has also urged Republican voters to treat him as if he were on the ballot, despite not personally contesting the elections.
Federal rules restrict the use of appropriated funds for certain partisan or self-promotional government communications. The legality of the current advertisements remains disputed, with critics seeking further scrutiny of their funding and purpose.
