Actor and social media creator Tamkenat Mansoor has been appointed as a member of this year’s Pakistan Academy Selection Committee, which selects the country’s submission for the Academy Awards.
The committee is headed by filmmaker, writer and producer Sana Zahra Jafri, who serves as its deputy chairperson. Other members include veteran actors Marina Khan and Hina Khawaja Bayat, artist Misha Japanwala, directors Nabeel Qureshi and Shahzad Rafique, and producer Badar Ikram.
Jafri said the committee was formed to bring together professionals from different generations and creative fields. She explained that members were selected for their experience in cinema, diverse perspectives and engagement with film and culture.
She specifically highlighted Mansoor’s contribution as an actress and social media creator. According to Jafri, Mansoor’s engagement with contemporary social issues and social justice, combined with her entertainment background, would provide a distinctive perspective during the selection process.
The committee has already selected Hanging by a Wire, directed by Mohammed Ali “Mo” Naqvi, as Pakistan’s submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Academy Awards. The documentary marks the first time Pakistan has selected a documentary for the category.
Naqvi previously chaired the selection committee but stepped aside for this year’s process because his own film was being considered. The committee reviewed the submitted films before reaching its decision.
