Armed opposition groups have intensified attacks against Taliban forces across Afghanistan, particularly in northern regions. The increase in violence has raised security concerns in neighboring Central Asian countries, especially along the Afghan-Tajik border.
According to reports, the Afghanistan Freedom Front, United Front of Afghanistan, and National Resistance Front claimed responsibility for at least 50 attacks during August. While the groups reported casualties among Taliban forces, many of the claims remain unverified.
Badakhshan Emerges as Key Conflict Zone
Badakhshan has become one of the main centers of armed resistance activity. Reports indicate that fighting in the province has shifted toward more direct confrontations between opposition groups and Taliban forces.
Districts including Zebak, Yaftal, Kishm, and Yamgan have witnessed increased clashes. The Afghanistan Freedom Front reported carrying out 21 operations across eight provinces between July 23 and August 22.
Meanwhile, the United Front of Afghanistan claimed around 20 attacks by August 20. The group later stated that it conducted 43 operations across 14 provinces during August.
The National Resistance Front separately reported nine attacks between July 29 and August 29 in Badakhshan, Kunduz, Herat, and Baghlan. However, independent verification of casualty figures remains limited.
Security Concerns Spread Beyond Afghanistan
The rise in attacks comes despite Taliban assertions that security has been established nationwide. The United Nations has also documented ongoing security incidents while noting that opposition groups remain fragmented.
UN figures showed 2,947 security-related incidents across Afghanistan between May 1 and July 31. The total represented an 11 percent increase compared with the same period last year.
The renewed violence has attracted attention in Central Asia, particularly in Tajikistan. Regional security organizations continue monitoring developments and conducting military exercises aimed at countering potential threats from armed groups and terrorism.
The situation highlights ongoing security challenges despite Taliban control of the country. Observers continue to monitor whether armed opposition groups can sustain their operations in the coming months.
