Authorities report seizure of missiles, drones and anti-tank weapons near Iraqi border
DAMASCUS: Syrian authorities announced on Thursday that security forces intercepted a large shipment of weapons allegedly intended for Hezbollah after stopping a tanker truck near the Iraqi border, according to statements from the Interior Ministry and state media.
The Syrian Interior Ministry said specialised security units identified a suspicious vehicle near the border crossing and conducted a search that uncovered long-range missiles, anti-tank guided missiles, drones and other military equipment. Officials alleged the shipment was destined for Hezbollah in neighbouring Lebanon.
According to the ministry, the truck was intercepted before entering Syrian territory, while investigations remain underway to determine the origin of the weapons, identify those involved and uncover any networks connected to the operation.
Security agencies continue investigation
State-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that authorities handed the seized weapons to the relevant investigative bodies for further examination and legal proceedings. The Syrian General Authority for Ports and Customs also confirmed the seizure, stating that the military equipment had been concealed inside an oil tanker travelling toward the coastal city of Baniyas.
Independent analysts from the Alma Research and Education Center, cited by Israeli media, claimed images released by Syrian authorities appeared to show drones, anti-tank missiles, rocket-propelled grenade warheads and other advanced military equipment. Reuters could not independently verify those assessments.
Border security operations intensify
Meanwhile, Syrian authorities said the interception forms part of broader efforts to combat weapons smuggling, terrorism and organised criminal networks operating along the country’s borders. Officials have also expanded operations targeting drug trafficking and cross-border smuggling in recent months.
The reported seizure occurred near the Tanf border crossing between Syria and Iraq, a strategic transit route that has gained greater importance for regional trade and oil transport.
Syrian officials noted that investigations are continuing and pledged to pursue all individuals connected to the alleged smuggling attempt. Authorities have previously announced several operations targeting suspected Hezbollah-linked networks and other armed groups as part of ongoing security campaigns across the country.
