Damascus says cross-border attacks violate sovereignty and threaten regional stability
Syria has strongly condemned recent Israeli military actions in the country’s southern region, accusing Israel of violating its sovereignty through cross-border incursions and artillery shelling in the governorates of Quneitra and Daraa.
In a statement, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said the operations terrorized civilians and constituted a violation of international law, the United Nations Charter, and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement governing the ceasefire line between the two sides.
The ministry argued that the continued military actions undermine efforts to restore security and stability while worsening the humanitarian situation for civilians living in the affected areas. It also warned that repeated attacks could further escalate tensions across the region.
Damascus calls for international action
Meanwhile, Syrian authorities urged the United Nations and the broader international community to take immediate steps to halt what they described as repeated Israeli violations.
The ministry called on international organizations to uphold the provisions of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and ensure respect for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and internationally recognized borders.
Officials stressed that protecting civilians and preventing further escalation should remain a priority for the international community.
Border tensions remain high
Tensions along the Syria-Israel frontier have remained elevated since the political changes that followed the fall of the Assad government on December 8, 2024.
Following those developments, Israel declared that the 1974 Disengagement Agreement was no longer applicable and subsequently moved forces into the buffer zone on the Syrian side of the border.
Damascus continues to reject Israel’s military presence in the area and maintains that the deployment violates Syrian sovereignty and international agreements. Syrian officials have repeatedly called for diplomatic efforts to prevent further deterioration of security conditions while urging international actors to support a peaceful resolution based on international law.
The latest statement reflects Syria’s continued push for international involvement as border tensions remain a source of regional concern.
