Switzerland secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday to book a place in the FIFA World Cup last 16. The Swiss side controlled the match from start to finish. They now await the winner of Friday’s clash between Colombia and Ghana.
Young midfielder Johan Manzambi played a key role in Switzerland’s opening goal. He made a brilliant run down the left wing before delivering a precise cross into the penalty area. Striker Breel Embolo finished the move with a simple tap-in to give Switzerland the lead.
Switzerland doubled its advantage just after the second half began. Dan Ndoye reacted quickly after Rafik Belghali failed to clear the ball properly. Ndoye controlled the loose ball and fired a low shot through a crowded penalty area. Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane got a hand to the effort but could not stop it from crossing the line.
Algeria struggled to create clear scoring chances throughout the game. The defeat ended their FIFA World Cup campaign disappointingly.
With the result, Algeria joined Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Senegal, and South Africa as African teams eliminated in the last-32 stage. Morocco remains the only African nation to reach the knockout rounds.
