An Anti-Terrorism Court in Islamabad has handed a murder suspect to police on seven-day physical remand. The suspect is accused in the killing of Pakistan Air Force Group Captain Asim Tariq.
Prosecutors said the accused was identified during an identification parade conducted at Adiala Jail. Additionally, eyewitnesses reportedly confirmed the suspect’s identity during the process.
Court Grants Seven-Day Physical Remand
The investigating officer requested a 20-day physical remand for further questioning. However, the court approved a seven-day remand instead.
Consequently, police took the suspect into custody to continue the investigation. Prosecutor Raja Naveed Hussain Kiyani informed the court about the identification proceedings.
During the hearing, Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Abul Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain made strong remarks. He questioned the accused over the consequences of the alleged crime.
The judge observed that the loss of a national asset had caused serious damage. Furthermore, he stated that expressions of remorse could not reverse the incident or restore the victim’s life.
Officer Was Killed During Alleged Rescue Attempt
Police said Group Captain Asim Tariq was fatally shot on Islamabad’s Ninth Avenue. According to investigators, he intervened after noticing an apparent abduction attempt.
Reports stated the officer saw a woman standing beside a motorcycle while a man allegedly tried to forcefully pull her away. The woman reportedly ran toward Asim Tariq’s vehicle seeking protection.
Police said the suspect allegedly argued with the Pakistan Air Force officer before opening fire. Asim Tariq suffered critical injuries and later died from his wounds.
Meanwhile, the suspect allegedly fled the scene after the shooting. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing as police continue gathering evidence in the case.
