The Supreme Court has introduced a new initiative to offer free legal aid to petitioners who cannot afford legal representation. The program is aimed at ensuring that underprivileged individuals have access to justice, regardless of their financial situation.
As of now, 103 lawyers have submitted their applications to join the program. The court has requested additional details from these applicants to finalize the panel of lawyers who will offer pro bono legal services to those in need.
In a related development, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, chaired by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, held two meetings on Friday to discuss the appointment of additional judges for the Islamabad High Court (IHC) and Balochistan High Court (BHC).
During these meetings, the commission approved the nominations of Azam Khan and Raja Inam Amin Minhas as additional judges for the Islamabad High Court. Out of four candidates considered, these two were selected through a majority vote.
Meanwhile, for the Balochistan High Court, the commission unanimously approved the nominations of Muhammad Asif, Najamuddin Mengal, and Muhammad Ayub as additional judges. The decision was made after a thorough review of the candidates’ professional qualifications and judicial experience.
This initiative by the Supreme Court, alongside the judicial appointments, reflects a continued commitment to improving access to justice and strengthening the judicial system in Pakistan.
