A rare astronomical event will occur on Wednesday, July 15, when the Sun will be positioned directly above the Holy Kaaba in Makkah. During the brief alignment, the Kaaba will cast no visible shadow because the Sun will stand exactly overhead.
According to the Jeddah Astronomical Society, the phenomenon will take place at 12:26:44 pm local time in Makkah. At that precise moment, the Sun will reach a 90-degree angle above the Holy Kaaba, placing both on the same vertical line.
Phenomenon Visible in Pakistan
The event will also be observable in Pakistan at 2:26:44 pm. Astronomers say Muslims around the world can use this natural phenomenon to accurately determine the direction of the Qibla without relying on a compass or electronic devices.
To identify the Qibla, people should place a straight stick or rod vertically on a flat surface at the exact time of the alignment. The direction opposite the shadow cast by the stick will point toward the Holy Kaaba.
Experts say this method provides one of the simplest and most accurate ways to verify the direction of prayer.
Natural Method for Finding the Qibla
The Sun passes directly above the Holy Kaaba twice each year because of Earth’s movement around the Sun. Before modern navigation tools became widely available, Muslims frequently used this astronomical event to determine the correct Qibla direction.
Astronomers note that the phenomenon remains a reliable reference for anyone wishing to confirm the direction of prayer with precision.
The brief alignment also highlights the close relationship between astronomy and religious practices. As a result, many people across the world observe the event each year for both scientific interest and practical religious purposes.
Experts advise those wishing to witness the phenomenon to be ready a few minutes before the scheduled time to ensure accurate observation and Qibla verification.
