Attacker Detonates Explosives at Main Entrance
At least seven people were killed and 18 others injured in a suicide bombing outside Kabal Police Station in Swat on Sunday.
The attacker reportedly attempted to enter the police compound through its main gate. Police personnel stopped him before he could move further inside.
Malakand Regional Police Officer Syed Fida Hassan Shah said the bomber detonated his explosives after officers blocked his entry.
The blast caused panic across the area and damaged the entrance of the police facility.
The police compound contains Kabal Police Station, Police Lines, a public facilitation centre and several government offices.
Authorities believe the intervention by police officers prevented the attacker from reaching the main buildings. A blast inside the crowded compound could have caused significantly higher casualties.
The identities of those killed and injured were not immediately released.
Officials were also working to determine how the attacker reached the heavily guarded location and whether he had received assistance.
No militant group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Peace Gathering Disrupted by Deadly Explosion
Initial reports said a public peace demonstration was being held in the square outside the police station when the explosion occurred.
Residents had reportedly gathered to express support for peace and opposition to growing militant violence in the region.
The suicide bombing created chaos among participants. People rushed away from the area as police and emergency workers moved towards the blast site.
The presence of the gathering may have increased the number of civilian casualties. However, authorities had not immediately confirmed how many victims were protesters or police personnel.
Emergency teams reached the scene shortly after the explosion.
The injured were provided initial medical assistance before being transported to Saidu Sharif Hospital.
Hospital authorities declared an emergency and called additional medical personnel to treat the victims.
Some injured people were undergoing emergency treatment. Officials had not immediately disclosed whether any of them were in critical condition.
Families also gathered at the hospital seeking information about relatives who had attended the demonstration or were present near the police station.
Police Seal Area and Launch Investigation
Police and security forces cordoned off the entire area after the attack.
Access to the police station and surrounding roads was restricted while bomb disposal specialists and forensic investigators examined the scene.
Officials collected human remains, explosive fragments and other evidence to identify the bomber and determine the material used in the attack.
Investigators are also expected to review surveillance footage from the police station and nearby buildings.
Security personnel launched a search operation in surrounding localities to identify possible facilitators or suspects connected to the bomber.
Checkpoints were strengthened across Kabal and other sensitive areas of Swat following the explosion.
The attack has renewed concerns about militant activity in a region that has previously experienced prolonged terrorism and security operations.
Police personnel and government facilities have remained frequent targets of militant violence across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The latest bombing is likely to increase pressure on authorities to strengthen intelligence gathering and security around police installations.
