A routine flight training session in Argentina turned into a shocking aviation tragedy when a flight instructor allegedly jumped from a training aircraft, leaving his student alone at the controls.
The incident occurred on July 4 near Córdoba, where a 22-year-old student pilot safely landed the aircraft despite facing an unimaginable situation.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the instructor’s death.
Instructor Left the Aircraft During Flight
According to Argentine prosecutors, Leandro Andrés Bertazzo, 42, was conducting a training flight with his student in a Cessna aircraft.
Shortly after takeoff, the instructor reportedly removed his headset, unfastened his seatbelt, and opened the aircraft door while flying at an altitude of about 850 feet.
Before leaving the aircraft, he turned to his student and said:
“You know what you have to do. Carry on.”
He then stepped out of the aircraft, leaving the trainee alone in the cockpit.
Student Pilot Safely Landed the Plane
Despite the shock, the student, identified only as Rosario, remained calm and continued flying the aircraft.
She successfully returned to the airfield and landed the plane safely without assistance.
After landing, Rosario immediately alerted emergency services. She also helped investigators identify the area where she believed her instructor had fallen.
Authorities later recovered Bertazzo’s body near the town of Toledo in Córdoba Province.
Investigation Continues Into the Incident
Although the incident happened on July 4, prosecutors released additional details this week as the investigation continued.
So far, authorities have found no evidence suggesting anyone else was involved. Likewise, no criminal charges have been filed.
Instead, investigators are working to reconstruct Bertazzo’s final moments by examining flight records, witness statements, and evidence collected from the scene.
Flying School Says Nothing Appeared Unusual
Colleagues at the flying school where Bertazzo worked said they had noticed nothing unusual before the flight.
According to Eduardo Álvarez, director of Flying Parrot Córdoba, the instructor had completed another training lesson earlier that day and behaved normally.
Nothing suggested the flight would end in tragedy.
“He made this tragic decision on board an aircraft with another person by his side,” Álvarez said.
Family Reveals Personal Struggles
Following the incident, Bertazzo’s family shared that he had been facing personal difficulties. His father said the instructor had previously sought psychiatric treatment before his death.
According to colleagues, they were unaware of those personal challenges.
Aviation Community Reacts to Rare Incident
The case has attracted widespread attention because of the extraordinary circumstances.
Student pilots receive training to handle emergencies such as engine failures and adverse weather conditions. However, they are not trained for situations where an instructor suddenly leaves the aircraft during flight.
Despite the emotional shock, Rosario maintained control of the aircraft and completed an unexpected solo landing.
Aviation professionals have described her actions as remarkable under such extreme circumstances. Meanwhile, investigators continue reviewing all available evidence to determine what led to one of Argentina’s most unusual aviation tragedies.
