US President Donald Trump has shared an image showing the Strait of Hormuz as part of the United States. The post comes days after Trump suggested declaring the strategic waterway US territory.
Trump shared the map on Tuesday through his social media account. The image labels the Strait of Hormuz as “New US Territory”, echoing his earlier comments about the waterway.
The move has renewed attention on Trump’s claims regarding the strategically important passage. The Strait of Hormuz remains a major route for global energy shipments.
Trump Claims ‘Total Control’ Over Strait
Trump previously discussed the Strait of Hormuz during an event on August 14. He claimed that the US Navy was enforcing a complete blockade of the waterway.
“After we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated, pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States,” Trump said.
Trump also made a separate social media post claiming that the United States had “total control” over the Strait of Hormuz. He said he believed Washington could maintain that control.
His latest map appears to reinforce the position he expressed earlier. However, the post does not provide further details about how such a territorial declaration would be implemented.
Iran Sets Conditions for Strait’s Reopening
Iranian officials have repeatedly rejected the conditions surrounding the US presence in the waterway. Tehran has said the Strait of Hormuz will not reopen unless Washington ends its intervention and naval blockade.
Iran has also linked the reopening of the strategic passage to the implementation of an agreement signed between Tehran and Washington on June 17.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial international shipping route. Any prolonged disruption could therefore have wider implications for energy markets and global trade.
Trump’s latest post has added another development to the growing dispute between Washington and Tehran. Meanwhile, Iran continues to insist that the waterway will remain closed until its stated conditions are fulfilled.
