Chinese AI startup StepFun has introduced the StepX Neo, describing it as the world’s first agentic smartphone powered by a native large language model (LLM). Unlike traditional AI-powered phones, the StepX Neo places artificial intelligence at the center of the user experience.
Instead of treating AI as a separate chatbot, the device aims to complete tasks, make decisions, and interact across multiple applications. Although the announcement has generated excitement, StepFun has yet to reveal several important hardware and launch details.
Step AOS Brings AI to the Core of the Smartphone
The StepX Neo runs on Step AOS, an operating system built specifically for AI agents. Rather than offering simple voice commands, the platform allows AI to understand requests, create action plans, and complete tasks automatically.
At the heart of the system is Amoo, the built-in AI assistant. Users can communicate with Amoo using natural language. Moreover, the assistant is designed to perform multi-step actions instead of simply answering questions.
StepFun says Step AOS focuses on three core capabilities: memory, decision-making, and execution. According to the company, the operating system can remember relevant user information and retrieve it within milliseconds. However, independent testing has not yet verified these performance claims.
On-Device and Cloud AI Work Together
The smartphone features Step Edge, StepFun’s on-device AI model. The company claims the model delivers leading performance among comparable edge AI systems. Nevertheless, StepFun has not publicly shared complete benchmark results or comparison methods.
The platform also combines local processing with cloud computing. As a result, simple tasks run directly on the device, while demanding workloads move to the cloud. This hybrid approach aims to balance performance with user privacy.
App Integrations Expand Everyday Functionality
StepFun has partnered with several major Chinese digital platforms to improve the StepX Neo experience. These integrations cover payments, shopping, navigation, office work, travel booking, ride-hailing, and content creation.
Consequently, Amoo can potentially complete tasks across different applications instead of merely opening them or providing instructions. However, real-world performance remains to be tested after the device reaches consumers.
Privacy and Security Remain a Key Focus
Since an AI agent requires broad access to personal information, privacy plays an important role in the StepX Neo.
StepFun says AI actions remain auditable, permissions are granted only when necessary, and accidental actions can be reversed. Additionally, the company states that agent operations run inside a trusted execution environment. Even so, it has not yet shared detailed technical information explaining how these protections will work during everyday use.
Hardware Specifications Are Still Unknown
Although StepFun has revealed the phone’s overall design, many hardware specifications remain undisclosed.
The company has not confirmed the processor, display, camera system, battery capacity, charging speed, storage configurations, or durability ratings. Likewise, it has not announced the official launch date, pricing, or international availability.
Interestingly, the rear of the device features a dot-matrix LED panel that resembles the design language popularized by Nothing smartphones.
StepFun Expands Beyond AI Software
Founded in Shanghai in 2023 by former Microsoft vice president Jiang Daxin, StepFun has focused primarily on developing foundation AI models and software solutions.
The company has collaborated with major technology and automotive brands, including OPPO and Geely. It has also secured backing from Tencent and other investors. With the StepX Neo, StepFun is expanding into consumer hardware for the first time.
Can StepX Neo Define the Agentic Phone Category?
The StepX Neo has attracted significant attention because it introduces an AI-first smartphone before many competing AI hardware projects reach the market.
However, the device still needs to prove its real-world value. Its success will depend on hardware quality, software reliability, privacy protections, pricing, and how effectively Amoo performs everyday tasks.
For now, the StepX Neo represents an early look at what agentic smartphones could become. Once StepFun reveals complete specifications and launches the device, users will gain a clearer understanding of whether it delivers meaningful advantages over today’s AI-powered smartphones.
