As the excitement builds for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has expressed his desire to see a final between the host nation, England, and Pakistan.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, which runs from February 19 to March 9, Khan shared that he would love to see the two teams face off in the final. This tournament marks Pakistan’s long-awaited return to hosting major international cricket after almost 30 years.
“I have a rule: I always support the winner. That way, I don’t lose,” Khan said, expressing his optimistic outlook on the Champions Trophy.
The tournament is set to kick off with an opening match between Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi, which will take place after a brief ceremony at the National Bank Cricket Stadium.
Among the most anticipated fixtures is the highly charged encounter between Pakistan and India, scheduled for February 23 in Dubai.
The 54-year-old Labour Party leader also showed his enthusiasm for cricket by offering his services to the selectors of both the Pakistan and England teams, humorously stating he was available to play if needed.
“Look, if you’re picking players for either Pakistan or England, I’m free. I can take time off and will play,” he joked.
Khan further spoke about his hope that Pakistan’s star batter, Babar Azam, would find his best form for the tournament.
“England suffered a heavy loss in India, and Pakistan hasn’t been performing at its peak recently. I hope Babar Azam returns to top form. Australia is always a strong team, and South Africa is good as well,” he added.
The mayor also emphasized the importance of the tournament being safe and successful, with an eye on the returning crowds.
“I’m hopeful for a successful ICC tournament in Pakistan. If the home team performs well, it’ll be a great event. Maybe we’ll see a Pakistan-England final,” said Khan.
His comments came just days after attending the British Asian Trust (BAT) dinner, which aimed to raise funds for education and healthcare initiatives in South Asia. During the event, he met Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan, who was also present to support the cause.
“Abhishek is a fantastic actor. We want Bollywood and Pakistan’s film industry to come to London and film here,” Khan remarked.
He also praised the Bachchan family, noting his past meetings with Abhishek’s father and mother, both well-known figures in the film industry.
“London is the capital of culture, and we had a wonderful time at the BAT dinner. Most importantly, the King’s charity raised money for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. A big thanks to Abhishek and everyone who contributed,” Khan added.
