LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to convene a “Connection Camp” to chart the future course of Pakistan cricket, according to sources speaking to Geo News on Saturday. This meeting, which is scheduled to take place on September 22, will bring together key figures from the cricketing world.
The camp will be presided over by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and will include Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten, red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie, heads of high-performance centers, senior cricketers, board officials, and both international and domestic directors.
A major focus of the camp will be to review and potentially alter the team’s leadership. The discussions are expected to include the possibility of changing captains for both shorter and longer formats of the game. Sources suggest that there may be significant deliberation on the future captains for white-ball formats and potentially a reassessment of Test captain Shan Masood’s position.
Gary Kirsten has recently returned to his homeland after submitting a report to the PCB in July, while Jason Gillespie has gone back to Australia following the Bangladesh Test series. Both coaches are expected to participate in the discussions remotely or in person.
Sources also indicated that Mohammad Rizwan, the wicket-keeper batsman, has emerged as a leading candidate for the captaincy, particularly for white-ball formats. This comes after Babar Azam was removed from captaincy for the Champions One-Day Cup, which has raised speculation about his future role as captain.
The PCB is expected to finalize decisions on the captaincy and other key aspects of team management ahead of the upcoming Australia tour in November. If Rizwan is appointed, there is a possibility he may be given leadership roles across all formats in the future.
