PCB Takes Drastic Action: Managers Sacked, Shaheen Afridi Accused of Misbehavior

LAHORE: In the aftermath of Pakistan’s disappointing early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024, star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi has found himself embroiled in controversy for alleged misbehavior towards coaches and management staff.

An internal probe is currently underway to investigate why team managers failed to address Shaheen Afridi’s reported attitude issues, despite their role in maintaining discipline within the team.

This revelation comes amidst broader reforms within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which recently saw the dismissal of Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from the selection committee following the team’s poor performance in the tournament.

Abdul Razzaq, who served on both the men’s and women’s selection committees, and Wahab Riaz, a prominent member despite earlier stepping down as panel chief, were informed that their services were no longer required in a statement issued by the PCB today.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi cited undue favoritism towards certain players as a factor in their removal, alleging that players supported by Razzaq and Wahab did not perform as expected, contrary to recommendations by other committee members.

Additionally, concerns have been raised by team coaches regarding player discipline and allegations of internal factions affecting team dynamics. Coaches have reportedly highlighted issues such as player rivalries, interference from players’ families, and its impact on team focus during tours.

In response to his removal, Wahab Riaz denied claims of pressuring the selection committee, asserting that decisions were made democratically among committee members. He announced plans to issue a detailed statement later today regarding the circumstances of his dismissal.

Moving forward, the PCB has retained Mohammad Yousuf, Asad Shafiq, and Bilal Afzal in the selection panel, alongside the team captain and head coach. Sources indicate that Wahab was advised to accept responsibility and resign voluntarily, but his refusal led to his termination.

The ongoing developments underscore broader challenges within Pakistan cricket, emphasizing the need for transparency, accountability, and a unified approach to revive the team’s fortunes on the international stage.
