16-Year-Old Affan Salman Wins World Youth Scrabble Championship
In a remarkable achievement, Pakistan’s Affan Salman has secured the World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC) title in Sri Lanka, leading the country to its fifth championship win. The 16-year-old prodigy triumphed by winning 19 out of 23 games in the international tournament, which featured 138 players from around the globe.
This victory sets a new record for Pakistan, making it the first country to win the WYSC five times. The championship, which began in Wollongong, Australia in 2006, has seen competitors from diverse nations including Australia, Bahrain, Canada, England, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
The WYSC is open to players under the age of 18 as of January 1 of the tournament year. The event has been hosted in various countries, including Malaysia (five times), Australia (twice), Dubai (twice), and once each in the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom.
