Neymar and Messi’s reunion hopes fade as Brazil unveils surprising plans

Neymar’s potential future with Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal has generated buzz about a possible reunion with his former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) teammate Lionel Messi at Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami. However, recent reports from Brazil suggest an unexpected turn for the Brazilian forward, hinting that his next destination may not involve teaming up with the Argentine legend.

Osvaldo Nico, the vice-president of the Board of Directors for Neymar’s former club Santos, revealed in an interview with the TV show Panico, “Neymar arrives at Santos in June. That is the conversation we are having.” This announcement comes as a surprise amidst other rumored options.

Since moving to Al Hilal from PSG in mid-2023, Neymar has struggled with injuries, limiting his on-field appearances. He currently enjoys one of the highest-paying contracts in football, reportedly earning over $100 million annually in Saudi Arabia—an amount that no other club, including Santos, could realistically match. Nonetheless, the emotional bond Neymar has with Santos could play a significant role in his decision.

Neymar debuted with Santos in 2009 at just 17 years old, quickly becoming the team’s standout player during his five-year stint. He led the club to six titles, including a Copa Libertadores, and netted 136 goals and 69 assists in 225 appearances, ultimately drawing the attention of Barcelona, who reportedly paid around $90 million for his transfer in 2013.

A decade later, Santos finds itself in a precarious situation, having faced relegation for the first time in 2023. Neymar’s potential return could serve as a pivotal moment for the club, sparking a resurgence and setting the stage for a return to prominence.

Reflecting on Neymar’s potential impact, Nico stated, “Everyone played well with Neymar at Santos; even (Ze) Love and André scored goals. He is going to Santos.”
